Safety Tips
Keeping you and your children safe from violence is crucial.
Be aware of potential threats such as weapons in the home and recognize danger signs. Ensure the security of your smart phones, computers, and other devices by being careful with your tech safety. Know your escape routes and identify safe places within your home. There is no shame in being a victim; the abuser is the one who should be ashamed. Tell trusted friends, family, and co-workers about your situation and make them part of your protection plan.
Think about where you will go for safety and how you will get there. Nursing stations can be great resources, and Aurora House can help with transportation to bring you to the shelter. If you are in immediate danger, call the police without hesitation. Don’t waste time packing; things can be replaced, but your life and your children’s lives cannot. It’s a good idea to have an emergency grab bag ready to go with money, medications, identification, and legal documents. Aurora House can provide basic necessities if you can’t include these in your escape case. Consider obtaining a protection order, and Aurora House staff can assist with the application.
Asking for help takes great courage, but it is the essential first step to safety and healing. Whether the abuser is your partner, parent, or child, we are here to listen and help you find your path away from the darkness of abuse.
Aurora House can help
We work with you so you can regain your self worth and make your own decisions. Understanding the cycle of violence, how it repeats, increases in frequency and intensity are key elements for safety planning.
